Aluminium surface treatments for mobility

How do we increase wear resistance and lifespan of aluminium profiles in EVs and mobility solutions?

More and more (e‑mobility) applications require lightweight and durable aluminium components. Think of connectors, heat exchangers, rails, and interior parts. These components are exposed to conditions such as mechanical load, moisture, dirt, and chemicals. At Mifa Surface Treatment, we guide our customers step by step in selecting the right treatment for wear resistance, corrosion protection, and service life.

Perform beyond the surface.

When which layer? Choose based on application and requirements

In surface treatments for mobility applications, we always make choices based on the alloy, load, and environment of the component. Our engineers always look beyond the surface. Mifa also uses test coatings to ensure that the selected coating delivers the optimal result. This way, you can be certain that your profile or component is lightweight, dimensionally stable, and corrosion‑resistant.

Within mobility applications, the following factors often play an important role:

  • Optical consistency in series (color/gloss).
  • Wear resistance for moving parts such as guides or couplings.
  • Cr6‑free and REACH‑compliant.
  • Electrical or thermal requirements, low friction, or high chemical resistance.
  • Coatings must be “FDA approved.”

Advantages of the right surface treatments for mobility applications

The right surface treatment provides increased wear resistance, reduced maintenance, and extended service life. In addition, there are several other advantages:

  • Corrosion resistance meets the MIL‑DTL‑5541 standard and is tested on Cr6‑free layers.
  • Color consistency in series production is ensured, especially for visible parts and interior elements. Both mechanical and chemical pre‑treatments are possible, as well as a wide range of color options.
  • No dimensional deviations occur during the anodizing process, even with thin‑walled profiles.
  • A test coating allows the validation process to be completed quickly and efficiently.
  • The layer build‑up is carefully tailored to critical fitting surfaces.

Workflow and compliance

The automotive sector requires scalable and consistently repeatable quality. That is why we work with fixed process parameters, full batch traceability, and extensive measurement reports, including coating thickness, adhesion, roughness, and color deviation (ΔE). Our processes are fully Cr6‑free and comply with the applicable REACH and RoHS directives.

In addition, Mifa is AS9100‑certified (aerospace). Although this is not an automotive certification, the level of process control and traceability within this standard is higher than common requirements in the automotive sector. Every day, we strive to deliver the highest quality and to safeguard it in every step of the production process. Through strict process and production controls, we emphasize our commitment to cosmetic perfection and traceability within our production workflow.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

  • What is the best coating for aluminium in EVs?

That depends on the application. For wear‑sensitive components, hard anodizing or TUFRAM® is often suitable. For aesthetic visible parts, we recommend colored anodizing.

  • Can Mifa anodize 6xxx or 7xxx alloys?

Yes. We have extensive experience with all alloys.

  • Are your processes REACH‑compliant?

Our processes are Cr6‑free and REACH/ROHS‑compliant. Documentation aligns with OEM/tier specifications and can be provided in PPAP format if desired.

  • How does the coating affect dimensional accuracy?

We design for dimensional stability and take coating thickness and roughness into account. A deviation of <10 μm is achievable and is reported.

  • How do you ensure dimensional accuracy during anodizing?

We ensure maximum dimensional stability by designing with careful consideration for layer growth (both inward and outward), surface roughness, and tolerances. Thanks to fixed process programs in our fully automated line, all parameters are strictly controlled, allowing us to maintain a dimensional deviation of <10 μm.
