High-tech aluminum profiles for the semiconductor industry

Endless applications and innovation for the semiconductor industry

Within the semiconductor industry, aluminium extrusion plays a key role due to the material’s lightweight, strength, and durability, making it an excellent solution for electrical conductivity. Aluminum is a prime example of a material frequently used in connection structures, which are essential for ensuring the reliability and optimal performance of semiconductors. The material is also ideal for machining into precision products and is easy to clean, making it suitable for cleanroom environments.

What is precision extrusion?

Precision extrusion is a manufacturing process in which aluminium or magnesium is pressed through a die with high accuracy to create complex shapes with precise tolerances.

In this process, an aluminium billet is heated in a furnace until it becomes soft enough to be deformed. The aluminium extrusion process uses different temperatures depending on the type of alloy, which greatly influences the final result. Watch the video for an overview of the extrusion process.

Aluminium components and applications for the semiconductor market

Thanks to its high thermal conductivity, aluminium plays a key role in cooling electronic components. As a durable material with excellent thermal and electrical conductivity, it is ideally suited for applications in the semiconductor industry. It is widely used in passive heat sinks, enclosures, and mounting structures that efficiently dissipate heat. For the semiconductor market, we produce, among other things, the following products:

  • Moving parts (motion)
  • Guidance systems
  • Machine enclosures
  • Machine frames
  • Precision components
  • Robotic arms and transport systems
  • Parts for wafer handling systems

The advantages of extrusion at Mifa

Mifa Aluminium is a specialist in precision extrusion of aluminium and magnesium profiles. With over 50 years of experience, we can extrude with utmost precision and attention to detail, achieving dimensional tolerances from ±0.02 mm—10 times more precise than the standard NEN-EN 12020-2.

High quality

With the AS9100D certification, we confirm that our production and management systems meet high-quality standards. Precision demands quality—both in our service and our techniques. We implement process controls as well as strict product inspections. At Mifa, we can also provide prototypes to verify the functionality of the product.

Flexible quantities

Our extrusion profiles can be processed in flexible quantities, all under one roof, throughout the entire production chain—from extrusion to assembly. This allows us to take full responsibility for the production process and deliver an optimal end result to our customers. Because we work with a minimum order quantity of 10 kg, we can supply in small batches—ideal for rapidly changing production lines in the semiconductor industry. We can also set up complete production lines with (co-)robots for series production.

Co-engineering for an optimal and innovative end product

Our engineers are at the forefront where innovation needs to exert its power. With years of expertise in precision extrusion, surface treatments, and other techniques, they delve deep into the details. Co-engineering at Mifa offers advantages such as:

  • Optimal results
  • Faster time-to-market
  • Lower costs through efficient design
  • A refined profile or component
  • Responsibility with a single party

We are also happy to explore the possibilities for cleanroom packaging.

Lightweight profiles for the chip industry

A strong material like aluminium is sometimes associated with heavy components. However, Mifa proves the opposite. Through our precision extrusion technology, we can create lightweight profiles without compromising their strength.

For the semiconductor market, lightweight aluminium parts are essential for precise positioning. Precision extrusion enables complex geometries with tight tolerances from ±0.02 mm and thin-walled profiles with wall thicknesses starting at 0.25 mm—helping to build stable frames and guide systems.
