Custom-made aluminium enclosures

How do you achieve the ultimate aluminium enclosure?

What are aluminium enclosures?

An aluminium enclosure is a casing made of aluminum that serves to protect electronic components, motors, or other critical parts. Aluminium is often chosen for enclosures due to its light weight, excellent thermal conductivity, and high strength. In addition to its functional benefits, it also offers aesthetic possibilities. In this knowledge base article, you will learn more about the properties and advantages of aluminium enclosures through precision extrusion at Mifa.

Mifa as a manufacturer of aluminum enclosures

At Mifa, all techniques come together under one roof thanks to co-engineering. This enables us to integrate any desired functionality into an aluminum enclosure.

We don’t supply standard enclosures, but customer-specific solutions tailored to your product and prepared for future developments. We actively contribute ideas about functionalities that can be directly co-extruded – such as cooling fins, mounting points, screw channels, and design features.

With over 50 years of expertise in precision extrusion, we have the knowledge and capabilities to create an aluminum enclosure that is both technically and aesthetically optimal.

Aluminium enclosures through precision extrusion

What makes Mifa a unique partner is its precision extrusion technology. We specialise in producing complex aluminium and magnesium extrusion profiles with dimensional tolerances starting from ± 0.02 mm—more accurate than the standard extrusion norm according to NEN-12020-2.

This high precision allows for enormous design freedom, enabling us to co-extrude many functions within the profile. Through clever construction and by assembling multiple small profiles with plates in between, we can create enclosures with unlimited dimensions that are modular and versatile.

”An optimal enclosure is created by applying years of know-how and co-engineering. Together with the customer, the needs and requirements become clear, allowing for a tailor-made solution to be found.”

Functionalities for aluminium enclosures

The functionalities listed below can be directly co-extruded into the profile; this saves on additional machining operations and allows the profile to be used immediately.

  1. Cooling for motor
  2. Removable cover for maintenance
  3. Aesthetic appearance
  4. Integrated screw channels for fastening the lid or cover profile
  5. Space for electronics
  6. Easy motor replacement

Cooling fins

When using electronics, heat is often generated. This heat is dissipated by applying additional cooling profiles. By integrating cooling fins directly into the enclosure, these no longer need to be purchased separately.

Example: a circuit board or electric motor produces heat, which must be dissipated to prevent overheating. Cooling fins increase the surface area, allowing heat to be dissipated faster. The larger the surface area, the better the cooling performance.

Mounting provisions

Integrated mounting provisions in aluminum profiles offer solutions for the easy and efficient attachment of components. Common provisions include:

  1. PCB mounting points: allowing circuit boards to be directly fixed in the profile without extra holders
  2. Clamp and angle systems: enabling quick assembly without tools; ideal for modular applications
  3. Roller or sliding guides: ensuring smooth movement inside the enclosure
  4. Screw channels: for secure fastening of covers or possible accessories without the need for additional drilled holes

How do you achieve the ultimate enclosure?

By means of smart design and co-engineering, you achieve the ultimate enclosure. One of our leading customers in the field of measuring instruments, Helmut Fischer, manufactures instruments with high-quality aluminium enclosures. These profiles are extruded, machined, and anodised at Mifa.
