Magnesium extrusion

Magnesium is the future! Especially now that Mifa has become a magnesium extrusion company with the in-house expertise to produce a wide range of magnesium components that are resistant to corrosion. This is a real breakthrough in a world where every gram counts, because magnesium is the lightest of all metals.

After years of research and development, magnesium profiles and magnesium components can be extruded. Mifa has the capacity to extrude with dimension tolerances up to 0.02 mm. The freedom of design with magnesium is just as great as with aluminium. Magnesium extrusion profiles can be used in areas including:

With our magnesium extrusion we even won the Materialica Design + Technology Gold Award with our technology!

The Mifa standard when it comes to magnesium extrusion

The level of precision we achieve during the aluminium and magnesium extrusion process means unprecedented possibilities and gives designers enormous freedom in design, without the restrictions of standard specifications. As a result, it is possible for Mifa to produce the best magnesium products. Our magnesium extrusion products are of the best quality, and exceed the standard with regard to straightness, torsion, concentricity, parallelism, surface roughness and fit. Interested? As a magnesium extrusion company, we also have the in-house expertise to apply surface treatments, achieving benefits like corrosion resistance.

Are you looking for lighter products and/or components for your machine?

Mifa is able de produce extruded magnesium alloy profiles. Magnesium is a lightweight metal with very good material properties. It is 35% lighter than aluminium and 80% lighter than steel. The magnesium used by Mifa is also high in strength, being at least 20% stronger than the conventional aluminium used in construction, related to the specific mass of the materials.

Magnesium in cars

Sustainability is becoming increasingly more important for companies on a globabl scale.This is also the case for car manufacturers. Cars need to be built in a more sustainable way, because it's becoming more important for consumers, while governments are targeting to reduce CO2 emissions. Car manufacturers gain various advantages when using magnesium:

  • It's completely recycable, which makes the production process more environmentally friendly;
  • The overall weight of cars is reduced when using magnesium, wich lowers production and transport costs;
  • A lighter car means lower fuel costs, making it a win-win situation for everyone involved.

Porsche is a car manufacturer that uses magnesium. For example, the Porsche 911 GT3 RS has a magnesium roof. Porsche tested magnesium, aluminium, and carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFPR) to find the best suitable material. Magnesium was the clear winner, saving ten kilograms of weight in total as the strongest and lightest material.
