The engineers of B|Braun AG of Melsungen, Germany, also found their way to Mifa for precision and co-engineering. B|Braun is a leading manufacturer of medical and pharmaceutical equipment. With production facilities in more than 64 countries and over 64,300 employees, B|Braun is one of the largest players in the medical industry.
The development of the new Perfusor® Space
B|Braun produces light, small customised medical devices and solutions. These are high-quality and progressive technical solutions. One of the products for which Mifa produces aluminium precision profiles is the infusion pump called Perfusor® Space.
The infusion pumps are used to infuse drugs and nutrition. These pumps are also used for blood transfusion. The system consists of a syringe that is mechanically controlled and monitored. In this way, the patient is provided with an exact dose or volume per time.
For the next generation of infusion pumps from B|Braun, the Spaceplus Perfusor®, the company was looking for digitalization, higher level of safety, reliability and a longer service life.
Complex extrusion profiles
The challenge for Mifa is the precision of the profile. Due to the small and light solution, it is important for B|Braun to have the smallest possible dimensional tolerances. With dimensional tolerances starting at ± 0.02 mm and straightness and torsion 3x better than the EN12020-2 standard, we offered the B|Braun engineers more freedom in design by pushing the existing limits. This precision allowed us to jointly develop the product the customer was looking for.

Mifa Surface Treatment and other in-house treatments
In addition to the accuracy that Mifa delivers, we also protect the profile with in-house anodizing. This means that we add an extra layer to the extruded profile with a fully automated surface treatment line. The additional advantage for the customer is that they only have to deal with one partner for the entire treatment process of the profile. This is because brushing, deburring and the machining of the profile are also carried out in-house at Mifa.

Saving time and money at Mifa Aluminium
Developing and producing precision aluminium extrusion profiles requires knowledge of the material, the process and the possibilities. Because our precision is already present in the profile from the extrusion process, costly CNC (post) processing can be partially, or even entirely if possible, omitted. This gives our customer unprecedented freedom of design. As a result, several functions can be combined into one smart profile shape.
After extrusion, the quality of the profile must also be guaranteed and additional treatments, such as surface treatment and CNC machining, must be carried out properly. For this very reason, Mifa assumes the entire responsibility of this process and carries out all these process steps in-house. This enables us not only to guarantee the highest quality, but also to save on costs and reduce the total production time.
